Way To Go, Nation

In Music on July 4, 2010 at 11:39 am

all created equalSomething you may not have noticed recently, but it bears mentioning. Have you looked at the lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner recently and noticed something conspicuously absent? Look for some gender- or race-specific language. It isn’t there.

Unlike England, who needs to rewrite its anthem every time the monarch switches sex, or Canada (really? ‘all thy sons command’?), the United States refers to a collective “we,” a group of free, brave, and proud people. It represents unbelievable luck on the behalf of the anthem’s early adopters. Nice job, America.

Only, Not In America

In Junk Food Vegetarian on June 16, 2010 at 7:37 pm

delicious ... forbiddenFor the uninitiated, this is called a “chip butty.” For the unanglian, that means this is a sandwich constructed of white bread, french fries, and ketchup.

I’ve heard horror stories about English cuisine. But nothing gives me more hope for my inevitable inaugural trip to the UK than the chip butty. For heaven’s sake, they wrote a song about it.

This would never happen in the United States. Not until I make it tonight. OM NOM NOM

Why I’m Not a Sports Fan- Sexism on the Ice

In Gender Studies, Sports on June 10, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I’ll admit that I have no interest in sports for several reasons, and definitely don’t follow hockey. However, when my boyfriend brought this ridiculously sexist cover to my attention, it merited a blog entry.

Rendezvous with a Catcaller: A True Story

In Gender Studies on June 1, 2010 at 6:14 pm

A word of caution to begin: Not to discourage ANY woman from confronting their abusers, but keep in mind that my confrontation occurred on a busy street in the middle of the day where I felt safe and protected.

Hearted

wantwantwantLet me describe this object for you: a handheld, portable, instant print film camera that is cheap, easily available ([Buy it at Walmart]) and fun to use.  Basically, made of awesome. WBBM turns to me and says, “Wouldn’t you just rather use an original Polaroid?” And to that I say, “FUCK and NO. Who spends $90 on film for a $2 camera?” Doitbuyitnow

Sensitivity Training

don't wear it out

After a week of morning radio deejays and local newscasters making ridiculously tasteless and insensitive jokes about the language of Iceland, it’s time for some knowledge. While I cannot expect every American to have a functional understanding of Icelandic, one word can’t be that hard.

Say it with me now: Ay-yah-fyal-la-yo-kool

In fact, five of the six syllables are common American social grunts. So it shouldn’t be that hard, right Chip Chipperson? Mad Dawg and The Screw? Read the rest of this entry »

I Want To Go To There

In Culture on April 19, 2010 at 12:36 pm

I want to live in this commercial. Granted, it was made by arguably the most devious company around today, but fuck all if I don’t want all of that wardrobe, hair, and makeup. Reminds me of Taggart Transcontinental.

“So we can get to The City!”

Another Pseudo- Feminist Bites The Dust…

In Comedy, Gender Studies on April 14, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Just when you think a mainstream celebrity is -FINALLY- representing feminism…utter disappointment sets in. Sorry Tina Fey, but this was an epic fail.

You Should Watch This

In Culture on March 26, 2010 at 6:45 pm

get it?So, my uncle has done it again. He created another show. Tell you what: have you ever felt nostalgic for All That or Kenan & Kel? The same guy who invented those shows, and a number of others, has a new one on Nickelodeon.

Victorious, if it’s anything like its predecessors, will likely be fun, hip, exciting, relatable, and very well done.  You should watch it. Tomorrow, after the KCAs.
